What causes a cold?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a variety of viruses cause colds. The rhinovirus is the most common kind. The rhinovirus can also cause asthma attacks and sinus and ear infections.
How are colds spread?
If someone you know has a cold, don’t hug or shake his hand. Colds are spread by:
- Handshakes and hugs
- Touching someone who is infected with a cold
- Sharing saliva (that means kissing or sharing a drink from the same glass)
- Touching a shared surface with a person who has a cold
- Airborne cold or cough droplets from an infected person
