What is this medicine?

SODIUM PHOSPATE SALT (SOE dee um FOS fate sawlt) is a saline laxative. It is used to treat constipation or to clean the bowel before a colonoscopy.

This medicine may be used for other purposes; ask your health care provider or pharmacist if you have questions.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

• abnormal blood levels of electrolytes like sodium, phosphate, potassium or calcium

• bowel problems like colitis, constipation, and obstruction

• change in bowel habits lasting more than 2 weeks

• chest pain

• dehydration

• heart failure

• kidney disease

• on a low salt or sodium diet

• stomach pain, nausea, vomiting

• an unusual or allergic reaction to sodium phosphate, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

• pregnant or trying to get pregnant

• breast-feeding

How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Mix this medicine as directed with water or other clear liquid before using. Use a specially marked spoon or container to measure each dose. Ask your pharmacist if you do not have one. Household spoons are not accurate. Drink more water or clear fluids as directed after taking this medicine. Do not take doses that are larger than those recommended on the product label or otherwise directed by your healthcare professional. Do not take more than one dose in 24 hours.

Talk to your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine in children. While this drug may be prescribed for children as young as 5 years old for selected conditions, precautions do apply.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.

NOTE: This medicine is only for you. Do not share this medicine with others.

What if I miss a dose?

This does not apply; this medicine is not for regular use.

What may interact with this medicine?

• aspirin

• certain medicines used to treat high blood pressure, like captopril, enalapril, lisinopril, or candesartan, losartan, valsartan

• diuretics

• NSAIDS, medicines for pain and inflammation, like ibuprofen or naproxen

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

• allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue

• irregular heart beat

• rectal bleeding

• seizures

• trouble passing urine or change in the amount of urine

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

• bloating

• dizziness

• headache

• nausea and vomiting

• stomach pain

How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a full glass of water. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. You must drink at least 8 ounces of clear liquids with each dose of this medicine. Examples of clear liquids are water, flavored water, lemonade (no pulp), ginger ale, or apple juice. Do not drink any liquids colored purple or red. If you do not drink enough liquids while you are taking this medicine you can get dehydrated, which can cause serious side effects.

A special MedGuide will be given to you by the pharmacist with each prescription and refill. Be sure to read this information carefully each time.

This medicine is for rectal use only. Do not take by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Wash your hands before and after use. Remove tip from enema bottle. Gently insert enema tip into the rectum. Squeeze bottle until almost all of the medicine is inside the rectum. Remove enema tip from the rectum and stay in position until the urge to evacuate is strong. Do not take doses that are larger than those recommended on the product label or otherwise directed by your healthcare professional. Do not take more than one dose in 24 hours.
